Do you ever feel that you have no energy, no drive, and the future looks bleak and you feel as if you just no longer care? If the answer is yes, then you may be suffering from depression. Sometimes you tell yourself to snap out of it but this becomes difficult. There is no need to despair, offers some tips on how you can start small and slowly make your way out of depression.

Seek social support.  For a person battling depression, this is easier said than done. People who suffer from depression tend to withdraw themselves from the company of others. The irony of this situation is that at this very time, you need the support of others more than ever before. You will be able to improve your mood if you make the effort to connect with others. Experts advise that you should identify people who make you feel safe and cared for and look for support from them.

Exercise. When depression sets in something as simple as getting out of bed can become a very difficult thing to do. Again, the irony of this situation is that exercise is one of the most effective ways of fighting depression. No matter how you feel, aim to do at least thirty minutes of exercise on a daily basis. Again, remember to start slowly and build up. Ten minutes exercise is better than no exercise at all.

Identify things that improve your mood. Everyone agrees that it is not easy to force yourself to be happy when you are not, but this does not mean that you are unable to do the things that make you feel better. Go back to that hobby which makes you feel alive. This could be a creative activity such as playing the piano or gardening. You could also join friends when they go out for a weekend trip into the country.

Watch what you eat. Dieticians indicate that the food that goes into your mouth has a direct link to the way you fee. If you suffer from depression, you should deliberately stay away from foods that can have an effect on the brain. These foods include the likes of alcohol, caffeine, Trans fats and anything that has been overly processed and preserved.

Control your thinking. Depression will tell you that you have no power over the bad things that are happening. It tells you that the situation is hopeless and cannot be helped. Everything you see, you see on the negative side. When you feel that such thoughts are taking over your life it is important for you to challenge. Deliberately tell yourself that all these fears are exaggerated. It is not easy to do this when you are depressed but do it nonetheless.
