The saying “you are what you eat” is true, especially during these days when obesity is becoming real and widespread among men. According to Diana Rodriguez, almost 75% of men are either overweight or obese. These statistics should get any man who is concerned about his wellbeing to start making more informed and healthier choices when it comes to food.
It starts with how you buy your food
Managing a healthy diet starts with your food buying habits. Nutrition experts advise that you should go buying your groceries after the gym. When you have just completed an exercise you are still motivated enough to honor your health goals. You also probably know that you should never go shopping on an empty stomach. Before you go shopping, eat well. If you shop while you are hungry you are prone to give in to those cravings for unhealthy food.
Before you leave the house to go out shopping, make sure that you know exactly what you are going to buy. The best way to do this is to make a list. If you do not like writing lists on pieces of paper, then use the notes feature on your phone to write the things you are going to buy. When you get inside the shop, use a shopping basket instead of a trolley. When you do not have the space to put the things you do not need, you will not buy things that are not on your list.
Only go to the sides of the shop where the things you need are. You have no business going to the fast food section of your supermarket if you do not need anything from there. In most supermarkets, you will realize that most of the food you need is in a certain part of the store. Refuse to be fooled by marketing jargon. Read labels carefully to see the different ingredients the food you are buying has. Check for any certifications by reputable urgencies.
Always have prepared food in the fridge
Nutritionists also advise that you should prepare your food for a whole week. This will help you to prepare the food when you have time, say over a weekend. When you have food in the freezer, the temptation to rush to the nearest fast food shop is greatly reduced. This also helps you to measure the right portions for each day. So you do not end up eating more than you need. It also saves energy.
Slow eating helps digestion
The idea is to eat slowly. It is advised that you should use your nondominant hand to slow you down when you eat. Eating with others also helps you to eat slowly. This allows you to chew your food adequately so that digestion is enhanced. Remember to drink water. It is one beverage which has zero calories. Nutritionists also advise that you should use the 80% rule. This means that you should eat only 80% of the food on your plate, or reduce your usual portion by 20%.
Buying, cooking and eating in a healthy manner is something that takes discipline. In the beginning, it is difficult but as you get used to it and start seeing the results, you will feel motivated to eat a healthy diet.
